Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about valve selection, specifications, and certifications for this industry.

Butterfly valves, ball valves, gate valves, control valves, check valves and knife gate valves may be used in pulp and paper mills. Selection depends on the process medium, fibre content, consistency, pressure, temperature and whether the application requires isolation or flow control.
Knife gate valves are commonly considered for certain pulp slurry applications because their gate design can help handle media containing fibres and suspended solids. The final selection depends on pulp consistency, solids content, pressure, valve design and the required sealing performance.

Evaluate the pulp consistency, fibre characteristics, abrasive content, operating pressure, temperature, flow rate and frequency of operation. Seat design, internal clearances, wear resistance and maintenance requirements should also be considered when selecting a suitable valve.

The valve must be compatible with the specific chemical, its concentration, operating temperature and pressure. Suitable ball, diaphragm, lined or other chemical-service valves may be considered after verifying the compatibility of the body, trim, seat and lining materials.

Butterfly, gate, globe and check valves may be considered depending on the service. Selection should account for operating pressure, temperature, flow requirements, condensate conditions and the applicable pressure-temperature ratings of the valve.

Select valves according to the actual process conditions and specify suitable materials, sealing arrangements and wear-resistant designs where required. Correct sizing, appropriate installation, preventive maintenance and monitoring of leakage or operating problems can also help reduce unplanned downtime.

A knife gate valve may be considered for suitable slurry and fibre-handling duties, while a butterfly valve may be preferred for compact isolation in compatible pipeline services. The choice depends on pulp consistency, solids content, pressure, flow conditions, sealing requirements and the manufacturer's application guidance.
