Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about valve design, performance, and automation for this application.

An emergency shut-off valve is used to stop or isolate fluid flow when a specified emergency condition occurs or when an operator initiates a shutdown. These valves may form part of an Emergency Shutdown (ESD) system in oil and gas facilities, chemical plants and other industrial processes.

Ball valves, gate valves and other suitable shut-off valve designs may be used, depending on the process conditions and required isolation performance. Selection depends on the fluid, pressure, temperature, required closure time, leakage requirements and applicable safety specifications.

An ESD valve is selected as part of a defined emergency shutdown function, with specified response, isolation and reliability requirements. A standard shut-off valve should not automatically be considered suitable for ESD duty unless the complete arrangement meets the applicable functional-safety and project requirements.

An automatic emergency shut-off valve receives an initiating signal from a control or safety system and moves to its configured safe position. Depending on the application, it may close or open to reduce risk. The required action, response time and safe state must be defined in the system design.

Pneumatic, hydraulic and electric actuation arrangements may be considered, depending on the valve design and safety requirements. Selection should account for operating torque, required stroke time, available utilities, stored energy, fail-safe action and environmental conditions.
A fail-safe arrangement is designed to move or remain in a specified safe state when a defined failure occurs, such as loss of a power or utility supply. The required state may be fail-close, fail-open or another defined position, depending on the process hazard assessment and system design.
The required closure time depends on the process hazard analysis, system pressure, pipeline characteristics and potential consequences of rapid closure. The specified time must balance effective isolation with risks such as pressure surges and water hammer where relevant.
Select a valve with suitable sealing materials and verified leakage performance for the intended service. Correct installation, functional testing, inspection and maintenance are important. Where fire-safe or fugitive-emission requirements apply, verify the relevant test evidence and product documentation.
Provide the valve type, size, process fluid, design and operating pressure, temperature, required closure time, safe-state requirement, actuator type, leakage criteria, end connections and quantity. Include project specifications and any required functional-safety, testing or certification documentation.
