Safety Relief Valve is an automatic pressure protection device designed to protect pressurized equipment and piping systems from excessive pressure. The valve opens when the system reaches its specified set pressure and discharges the process medium to reduce pressure, then closes after pressure returns to an acceptable level. Safety relief valves can be selected for applications involving steam, air, gases, liquids and other compatible process media, depending on the valve design and service conditions. A Safety Relief Valve is an automatic pressure protection device that opens when system pressure reaches its specified set pressure and releases excess pressure to protect the equipment and piping system.
Set pressure is the pressure at which the valve is adjusted to open. It must be selected in relation to the normal operating pressure and the maximum allowable working pressure of the protected equipment.
Back pressure at the valve outlet can affect its effective set pressure and lifting/reseating behaviour. Variable back pressure may require a suitable balanced or specially designed valve arrangement.
Some safety relief valve designs can be used for both compressible and incompressible fluids, but the valve must be specifically selected and sized for the actual service and required relieving characteristics.
A safety valve generally provides rapid or “pop” opening and is commonly associated with compressible fluids such as steam and gases, while a relief valve generally opens progressively and is commonly used for liquid service. A safety relief valve can perform either function depending on its design and application.
The valve must be capable of discharging enough fluid to prevent the protected equipment from exceeding its allowable pressure during the applicable overpressure condition. Valve size and orifice selection therefore depend on the required relieving capacity.
Steam service can involve high temperature, compressible flow and specific lifting, discharge and reseating requirements. Therefore, the valve design, trim materials, set pressure and applicable code requirements must be evaluated specifically for steam service.
